REIF

Objective: REIF seeks to boost the modal share of rail freight transport and improve the poor connectivity of regional rail systems by designing and deploying tools to assess a region’s rail freight prospects, identify bottlenecks and adopt effective measures to keep vulnerable connections in service and even to reopen defunct rail lines.

The pilot measures serve to test new approaches in overcoming rail network shortcomings in the participating regions. The project will also analyse the opportunities and conditions – from organisational aspects to commercial viability, i.e. the need to reach a critical mass of passengers – to introduce new rail services.

The deliverables will be used to design region-specific strategies and integrate them into regional policy instruments. Workshops will be held to provide training to local and regional administrative authorities so as to retain knowledge in this area within the relevant institutions. The experience gained under REIF project will be shared across the regions of Central Europe.
