The Rail4Regions project addresses the challenge of shifting freight transport from road to rail as a measure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Despite the environmental benefits of rail freight, its competitiveness is hindered by infrastructure gaps and the poor integration of regional rail lines into the trans-European freight network.

The project aims to strengthen spatial and transport planning capacities to enhance the accessibility of rail freight infrastructure. Project partners are developing technical solutions to optimise regional rail lines and intermodal access points, alongside action plans to facilitate the integration of these solutions into regional development strategies. In doing so, the project promotes more sustainable, efficient, and interconnected freight mobility across European regions.
